June 4: The Autobiography of a Resistance Fighter and the Civil War 1863-1865

Fr. Marian Mazgaj will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling on Tuesday, June 4 at noon to discuss his new autobiography, I Will Go to the Altar of God: What It Took to Become a Priest in Communist Poland.  During WWII, Fr. PEOPLE'S UNIVERSITY American History 2, The Civil War & Statehood: Tuesday, June 4 at 7 PM--"The Civil War, Pt. 2, 1863-1865," will be taught by the noted Civil War expert Kristopher White of Pittsburgh. White is a former staff military historian at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. He is the co-author of Chancellorsville's Forgotten Second Front: The Second Battle of Fredericksburg, Salem Church, A Season of Slaughter: the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House and Simply Murder: The Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862.  White's class will cover events from 1863-1865, including the key military strategies and tactics that developed during the last half of the war; the military drafts, the wartime monetary inflation; civilian responses to the war; and turning points during 1863, 1864 and 1865. People's University programs are free and open to the public. Baseball Legend Satchel Paige to Visit Lunch With Books!

Royal Shakespeare Company actor and playwright, Cedric Liqueur, will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling on Tuesday, May 28 at noon to present his solo performance on the life of Leroy "Satchel" Paige, one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all-time. Paige was the first Negro League player to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The play was written in collaboration with the Satchel Paige family and is licensed by Satchel Paige Enterprises.  Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. After a backup trip with President Nixon, John L. Haigh set out to become a permanent member of the Air Force One flight crew. After flying missions with the Apollo 17 astronauts and world leaders like Queen Elizabeth, Haigh was selected in 1979 as a permanent member of the crew, serving Presidents Carter, Reagan, and Bush, Sr. Mr. Haigh will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling on Tuesday, May 21 at noon to discuss his adventures. Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Class 3, "An Introduction to the Civil War," will be taught by Roger Micker, past president of the Upper Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable, a retired history teacher at Steubenville High School, a member of the Ohio 150 Sesquicentennial Committee, a member and presenter for the Friends of Gettysburg, and a Civil War reenactor. The class will provide an overview of the major American political, social, and economic issues from the second half of the eighteenth century to just prior to the attack on Fort Sumter. People's University programs are free and open to the public. PEOPLE'S UNIVERSITY American History 2, The Civil War & Statehood: Tuesday, May 14 at 7 PM--Class 2, "Lincoln and the Secession Crisis," will offer a look at the four presidential campaigns of 1860; the secession movement and Lincoln's evolving positions toward it; the key relationship and correspondence of Abraham Lincoln and Alexander Stephens [vice president of the Confederacy]; and the decision of the Confederate national government to assault Fort Sumter. The instructor will be the highly regarded Civil War expert Rea Redd, Director of Eberly Library at Waynesburg University where he also serves as an instructor of American history. Since 1993, Redd has reenacted the American Civil War as a Federal infantryman, a Federal Medical Service Captain and as President Abraham Lincoln. He is the author of Gettysburg Campaign Study Guide, Volume One. People's University programs are free and open to the public. Program Change: Four Women of Wheeling

Please Note: Due to illness, the Lunch With Books program scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday May 7 at noon--Anna Jarvis portrayal by Kate Quinn--will be postponed. We are offering a substitute program, Four Women of Wheeling, featuring portrayals by Jeanne Finstein and Judi Hendrickson. A full description follows.

Four Women of Wheeling: As we commemorate the 150^th anniversary of the Civil War, the next Lunch with Books program will focus on the lives of four Wheeling women who were caught up in the challenges of the time. Two were married to strong Union supporters; two favored the Confederacy. Judi Hendrickson and Jeanne Finstein will present first-person portrayals of these women – Judi as Dr. Eliza Hughes and Ellen (Mrs. Robert) White, and Jeanne as Mary Hobbs (Mrs. Dr. Robert) Hazlett and Sarah Pallister (Mrs. Chester D.) Hubbard.
