EARLY WHEELING ON FILM

Jim Thornton of Creative Impressions Studios will be at the Ohio County Public Library’s Lunch With Books program on Tuesday, July 31st at noon to screen the fascinating DVD entitled, Early Wheeling. The DVD features over 200 still images of the city accompanied by audio accounts from the people who lived in the Wheeling during those days. The interviews were recorded as a part of the Spoken Word oral history project. Creative Impressions has published several books and videos on Wheeling’s history, including Doc Williams: Looking Back, Greetings From Wheeling: Historic Postcards, and Wheeling Island: A Photographic History. Mountaintop Removal Mining

On Tuesday, July 24th at noon filmmaker Sasha Waters will screen segments of her award winning PBS documentary Razing Appalachia, a film that explores the controversial issue of mountaintop removal mining in West Virginia. It's the story of a remarkable grassroots fight against political inaction and against the second largest coal company in America. Ms. Waters will also show a brief clip from her new work-in-progress, a documentary called This American Gothic that uses the history of the famous painting by Grant Wood to explore the struggle of a rural Iowa town to survive in a 21st century economy. Cerrone Talks Preservation

On Tuesday, July 10th, Lunch With Books welcomed Wheeling resident Dominick Cerrone. An engineer and the owner of Good Mansion Wines, Mr. Cerrone shared before and after photos as well as stories of his experiences renovating two historic properties on 14th Street in East Wheeling. The event was co-sponsored by the Wheeling National Heritage Area Corporation.

NEW PROGRAM ANNOUNCED FOR AUGUST

DR. SCOTT HAHN

Popular speaker and teacher Dr. Scott Hahn will be at the Ohio County Public Library’s Lunch With Books program on Tuesday, August 21st at noon. Dr. Hahn has delivered numerous talks nationally and internationally on a wide variety of topics related to Scripture and the Catholic faith. Over 500 of these talks have been produced on audio and videotapes by St. Joseph Communications.

Dr. Hahn is currently a Professor of Theology and Scripture at Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught since 1990, and is the founder and director of the Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology. In 2005, he was appointed as the inaugural Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hahn has written numerous books and articles, including, most recently, Letter and Spirit (Doubleday: New York, 2005), Understanding the Scriptures (Midwest Theological Forum: Chicago, 2005), and Ordinary Work, Extraordinary Grace: My Spiritual Journey in Opus Dei (Doubleday Religion: New York, 2006). At Lunch With Books, he will discuss his latest book, Reasons to Believe: How to Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith (Doubleday: New York, 2007). Scott Hahn has ten years of youth and pastoral ministry experience in Protestant congregations (in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, Kansas and Virginia) and is a former Professor of Theology at Chesapeake Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1982 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, Virginia. He entered the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, 1986.


Copies of Reasons to Believe as well as other books will be available for purchase and signing.

Note: Although admission is free as usual, seating is limited. Due to Dr. Hahn's popularity, a close to capacity crowd is expected.
