April 6: More Steamboats!

Historian John Bowman will return to the Lunch With Books program at the Ohio County Public Library on Tuesday, April 6 at noon to discuss his new book, A Pictorial History of Wheeling and Ohio River Steamboats, a guide to the steamboats of the Upper Ohio Valley from 1850s-1940s with over 400 illustrations. Doug Wood as Cherokee Warrior Ostenaco (History Alive!)

Cherokee warrior Ostenaco will visit Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling on Tuesday, March 30 at noon. Ostenaco was a leader of Cherokee warriors who assisted Virginia military leaders against northern tribes allied to the French in the French and Indian War. He led his war gang north along Ohio River past Wheeling in 1758 to terrorize the French at Fort Duquesne and Fort Presque Isle. His leadership provided a much-needed Indian alliance for the British colonial settlements in much of present day West Virginia and beyond. Doug Wood honors his Cherokee ancestors by portraying “Mankiller Ostenaco” in a Chataqua style first-person presentation for the W.V. Humanities Council History Alive! program. 18th century Cherokee lifeways are also highlighted. Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. March 16: IRISH BALLADS

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the return of Pittsburgh balladeer Mike Gallagher to the Lunch With Books program at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling. Mike, who will be at the library on Tuesday March 16 at noon, has been performing for more than 30 years. Aside from being a mainstay at many Pittsburgh pubs, he has also performed at the 3 Rivers Arts Festival, the Pittsburgh Irish Festival, the Wheeling Celtic Celebration, & on the Echoes of Erin radio show. Master of the Irish ballad, Mike has established himself as an entertainer who brings humor and spirit to every performance. Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. The Ohio County Public Library facilitates book discussion groups for both young adults and adults. Currently, the OCPL offers two adult groups, which meet on the first Monday and third Thursday of each month.
