FRIDAT AT NOON: THE WHEELING BRIDGE CASE
On Friday, July 15 at noon, at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, find out how and why Pittsburgh filed suit to have Wheeling’s revolutionary new bridge (and now its most beloved landmark) removed. Dr. Elizabeth Brand Monroe, professor of History at Indiana University and the author of The Wheeling Bridge Case: Its Significance in American Law and Technology, will discuss the issues raised in State of Pennsylvania v. Wheeling and Belmont Bridge Co. Decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1852, the case involved Pittsburgh factory owners who claimed the bridge would block steamboats and interfere with commerce. Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Patrons are invited to bring a bag lunch and free beverages are provided. Please call the library at 304-232-0244 for more information.
