Cherokee warrior
Ostenaco will visit Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling on Tuesday, March 30 at noon. Ostenaco was a leader of Cherokee warriors who assisted Virginia military leaders against northern tribes allied to the French in the French and Indian War. He led his war gang north along Ohio River past Wheeling in 1758 to terrorize the French at Fort Duquesne and Fort Presque Isle. His leadership provided a much-needed Indian alliance for the British colonial settlements in much of present day West Virginia and beyond.
Doug Wood honors his Cherokee ancestors by portraying “Mankiller Ostenaco” in a Chataqua style first-person presentation for the
W.V. Humanities Council History Alive! program. 18th century Cherokee lifeways are also highlighted. Lunch With Books programs are free and ope

n to the public. Patrons are invited to bring a bag lunch and free beverages are provided. Please call the library at 304-232-0244 for more information.
