May 6 The Civil War Battle of the Wilderness

Civil War expert Kris White will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library on Tuesday, May 6 at noon to discuss the Battle of the Wilderness. The first battle of Grant’s Overland Campaign was fought in a dense woodland known as The Wilderness, May 5-7, 1864. Kris White is the co-founder of Emerging Civil War and has authored several articles & books on the Civil War. Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. John Ford made films that won more awards, but he never made any film more accomplished or critically esteemed than this spectacular Western, his first in the Sound era and the first filmed on location in his beloved Monument Valley. John Wayne stars as the Ringo Kid, and audiences ever after have labored under the misassumption that this was his screen debut, or at the very least his first starring role (it was neither). Instead, it was the first time Wayne exploded into the American imagination, and national iconography. A cross-section of frontier society – a gambler, a banker, a lawman, a gentlewoman, a drummer, a prostitute, a doctor, and a fugitive (Ringo) – make their way across hostile Territories of the Southwest as Ford redefines the meaning of “civilization.”

Civil War Photo Extravaganza

Come and join the particularly enthusiastic Garry Adelman for a photographic tour of the Civil War at a special edition of Lunch With Books on Monday April 14 at noon. Photographs are a key primary source that assist in understanding the conflict; and when grasping the aims and methods of the photographers and pairing their images with modern photos taken at the same place, the impact is even more valuable The Civil War was the first war to be extensively photographed. It saw the real birth of photojournalism, technological innovations, the first photos of American dead soldiers and a public impact that cannot be overstated. Through then and now, 3-D and even 4-D techniques, Adelman will present the Civil War in a manner available nowhere else.

Director of History and Education for the Civil War Trust, Garry Adelman earned his B.A. in business from Michigan State University and his M.A. in history at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. He is the author, co-author or editor of Gettysburg in 3-D (2013) Antietam in 3-D (2012),Manassas Battlefields Then & Now (2011), The Civil War 150 (2011) Antietam: Then & Now (2005), The Myth of Little Round Top (2003), The Early Gettysburg Battlefield (2001), Little Round Top: A Detailed Tour Guide (2000), and Devil's Den: A History and Guide (1997) as well as nine Civil War image booklets. He has published articles in The Gettysburg Magazine and Hallowed Ground and conceived and drafted the text for wayside exhibits at the Cedar Mountain, Spring Hill, Third Winchester, First Day at Chancellorsville, Mine Run and Slaughter Pen Farm battlefields. He has lectured at hundreds of locations across the country including the National Archives and the Smithsonian and has appeared as a speaker on the BBC, C-Span, Pennsylvania Cable Network and on HISTORY where he was a chief consultant and talking head on the Emmy Award-winning show Gettysburg (2011). He is a founder and longtime vice president of the Center for Civil War Photography and is a Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg.

The Ohio County Public Library at 52-16th Street in Wheeling will offer a spring book sale from Saturday, April 26 through Friday, May 2. The sale will take place during regular library business hours: Saturday 9-5, Sunday 1-5, M-Th 9-9 and Friday, 10-5. Prices will be $1.00 for hardback books and large format paperbacks, $.50 for small paperbacks, $.25 for magazines, $2.00 for books on CD, $1.00 for music CDs, and $1.00 for DVDs.
