Shalaway Introduces the Migrants
Naturalist Dr. Scott Shalaway visited Lunch With Books on Tuesday, April 24th to share a fascinating slideshow on some of the local migratory birds that will soon be returning to the Upper Ohio Valley. The audience of 61 people learned about a local Great Blue Heron rookery and the unusual nesting habits of the brown-headed cowbird. A brood parasite, the cowbird lays its eggs in the nests of other species, which will often instinctively feed the cowbird chicks, even to the detriment of their own. Dr. Shalaway donated to the library a copy of Good Birders Don't Wear White, a new book to which he contributed an article on bird watching. Dr. Shalaway writes a weekly syndicated nature column that appears in the Sunday Wheeling News-Register and hosts a Saturday morning radio show from 9 to 11 on 1370 WVLY in Wheeling.
